Getting started

Two routes:

  • Browser — open openmmo.to.nexus and sign in with Google. Nothing to install.
  • Desktop clientdownload OpenMMO Agent. Adds multiple server profiles, encrypted key storage, and letting an LLM drive your character while you watch.

Pick a class first, then roll stats — the order matters, because class modifiers are applied on top of the dice.

Up to 3 characters per account. You choose a name, class and gender.

The full modifier table and formulas are in Character and attributes. Three things to know:

  • The total is always 72, whatever class you pick. Class decides the shape of your spread, not how much you get.
  • Want to survive hits? Pick a d10 hit-die class: Knight, Barbarian, Caveman, Valkyrie.
  • The Tourist has a d4 hit die — the squishiest thing in the game. Not recommended for a first character.

  • Money: 0 — no starting funds. Your first income comes from selling something.
  • Weapon: Worn Iron Sword (1d6) — note it has no price, so merchants won’t buy it. That’s deliberate: it stops people rerolling characters to cash out starting gear.
  • Satiation: 700 — inside the Well-Fed band, so you have ×1.1 move and attack speed and ×1.15 carry weight.

You have nothing, so you need to kill something and sell what it drops.

Start with the Kobold — level 1, Guard 8, and it only fights back, so it won’t charge you. Whether you fight is your call.

MonsterLevelHealthGuardYour hit chanceIts damageXPDropsAttacks first?

Goblin 2 9 9 55% 1d4 5 Small Sword 10% Yes

“Your hit chance” assumes level 1 with STR 10 (modifier 0). Higher STR improves it.

Rica sells the following. Rough priority for a broke character:

ItemPriceWhy you want it
Healing Potion 6s Heals 6d4 (average 15). Drinking at full health or while downed keeps it rather than wasting it
Lembas Wafer 60c 600 nutrition at 0.15 kg — far and away the most weight-efficient food, and the right answer for long trips
Bread 20c The best nutrition per copper. Buy this when money is tight; one loaf covers a game day
Torch 50c Light for nights and dungeons. The cheapest thing you actually need
Scroll of Return 8s Instant trip home. Your insurance when you wandered too far or are about to die
Leather Pants 25s Guard +1. Only a 30% drop in the Crypt, so buying is faster
Spear 35s 1d6 — same tier as your starting weapon, but this one can be sold
Fishing Rod 3s Only if you want to fish. Modest but steady income
Campfire Kit 30c Light a fire to grill fish. Raw fish cause food poisoning

Rica buys at 40% of base, so buying low and selling high doesn’t work. But she is an LLM-driven NPC, and you can talk her down — a good story or a piece of news genuinely earns a discount, and higher CHA widens the room to negotiate. See Shops and economy.

Satiation starts at 700 and drops 1 every 20 seconds while you’re online (not offline). Below 300 you lose the Well-Fed buff; below 100 you go Weak: move and attack speed ×0.75, carry ×0.6, and HP regeneration stops entirely.

The good news is you can’t starve to death — it stops at 0. But fighting while Weak is a bad deal.

A game day (three real hours) burns 540, which is exactly one loaf of bread. The design target is one meal a day.

Full comparison in Food and satiation.

  • You keep your equipment.
  • You lose 15% of the current level’s XP band.
  • If that drops you below the level’s starting XP you lose a level — but never more than one per death, and never at level 1.
  • You respawn at the origin (0, 0, 0) at full health, with satiation reset to 300.

Dying isn’t cheap, but it isn’t ruinous. Details in Combat.

  1. Kill Kobolds and Goblins for gear and XP, and sell the weapons they drop to Rica.
  2. Find the Old Crypt — the 5-floor tier-1 dungeon. The Leather Helmet is a guaranteed drop, and Leather Pants and Leather Belt are 30% each. Assemble the leather set (Guard 6 total).
  3. Then Orc Warrens — 10 floors, filling in the leather chest, gloves and boots plus Iron Boots and an Iron Helmet. The boss, the Orc Warlord, is a guaranteed Iron Sword (1d8) — which no shop sells.

Both dungeons are near Aldermark; coordinates and distances are in World map.

  • Hits must exceed, not match — d20 plus your attack bonus landing exactly on the target’s Guard is a miss.
  • The bag has a weight limit (STR × 15, ×1.15 while Well-Fed). Going over doesn’t stop you moving, but it refuses new pickups and purchases.
  • Anything dropped on the ground can be picked up by anyone. It’s floor-aware: something dropped on a house’s second floor can only be retrieved from that floor.
  • Raw fish cause food poisoning — five minutes of ×0.6 to everything with regeneration stopped. Grill it first.
  • Weapons never come from chests. Want a particular weapon? Kill the monster carrying it.
